Annotations for MK Ultra

Lyric: It resonates the core, creates unnatural laws
Annotation:
The core being of the people who undergo brainwashing is entirely changed. This process is not natural at all – it employs the use of hallucinogenic drugs, physical torture, and emotional and sexual abuse to entirely override the processes of the mind.

Lyric: Replaces love and happiness with fear, ooh
Annotation:
In most people, love and happiness are strong emotions that are the source of many decisions and important actions. Through the various methods of torture, the motivation for human actions can change. Instead of doing something out of love and happiness, the victim of brainwashing will do it out of fear, because their subconscious has been tampered with and filled with new instincts and compulsions. Thus, love and happiness are replaced with fear. This line could also include an implicit reference to George Orwell’s 1984, which inspired other songs in the album ( “Resistance”, “United States of Eurasia (+Collateral Damage)”): Winston’s torture and mind control caused him to finally crumble before Big Brother, and betray his love, Julia. Once his human love was replaced with fear, Winston’s brainwashing was complete.

Lyric: All of history deleted with one stroke, ooh
Annotation:
As written in George Orwell’s 1984, the government will use its place of absolute power to alter history and compromise the truth. No one will be able to prove that the government is wrong if there is no historical evidence left.

Lyric: Invisible to all
 The mind becomes a wall
Annotation:
If the government succeeds in controlling the minds of many people, their power will be “invisible” – no one will know who to trust and who is and isn’t under the influence of the authorities. Their power will become one collective “mind” that works as a hive unit, manifesting itself in the minds of many brainwashed people. Like a “wall,” this mind will be impenetrable and will protect the government’s position of power and control.

Lyric: Coercive notions re-evolve
Annotation:
“Coercive notions” would be ideas or actions forced upon someone – in this case, through mind control and brainwashing.

Lyric: The wavelength gently grows
Annotation:
“The wavelength” refers to an electric signal that is sent out to supposedly trigger the minds of the MK Ultra subjects in order to control them. This was a concept that is all part of the illegal CIA project to control people by remote means.

Lyric: A universe is trapped inside a tear
Annotation:
Once the poor “chosen ones” had been brainwashed and turned from “humans” to “things”, they probably lost the capability to feel any emotion at all. Still, they actually were humans, so they could still cry and, even though those tears could mean nothing to them (“I’m just a poor object exploited by someone with no concience, why should I feel any emotion?”), we all know that they hide a whole world inside. Those tears are hiding the past life of the poor subjects who fell between the hands of their handlers.

Lyric: And they’re breaking through
 And they’re breaking through
 They’re breaking through
 (We are losing control)
 They’re breaking through
 They’re breaking through
 They’re breaking through
 Now we’re falling
 We are losing control
Annotation:
The controllers of the project are succeeding, and breaking the minds of the narrator and their peers. Thus, they are taking control.

Lyric: How much deception can you take?
How many lies will you create?
How much longer till you break?
 Your mind’s about to fall
Annotation:
MK Ultra used several methods such as sexual abuse and other traumatic events that cause your mind to go into a dissociated state, where the victim can be easily controlled; hence the lines “how much deception can you take” and “how many lies will you create”.
